My Lifeline

Is music. I’m always incredibly amazed by how moved everyone can be by lyrics, a guitar riff or a beat. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t listen to or like music of some kind. It is one of the very few things that every single person on the planet shares. It’s different for everyone, but at some point every person has been affected by music.

Other than books, music is the one thing I can never get enough of. I’m always finding new stuff that I love and become obsessed with. Certain songs can bring back the most amazing memories.

Like Clarity by John Mayer conjures up me sitting at my desk working in my apartment on the most beautiful, clear Spring day I had seen in ages. Every time I hear it I remember the perfect blue sky and the fresh air coming in through the window. John got me through a lot of my most horrible days when I was living alone.

Going to shows is so great simply because you are sharing your passion with hundreds (or thousands) of other people who feel the exact same way. If you’re lucky you find new music to love in the opening acts as well. Hubby doesn’t understand this really, I have to drag him unwillingly to shows most of the time. The only one he was actually totally willing to see (and was somewhat excited about by the time we went) was Foo Fighters, who were amazing of course.

Lately I’ve gotten so much new music I haven’t had time to listen to it all properly! Since seeing Paramore last month I got all the opening acts – Now Now Every Children, Paper Route and You Me At Six. All great and wonderful but I haven’t listened to them all properly yet, learned the lyrics, found hidden meanings in them. I’m currently listening to You Me At Six’s Take Off Your Colours and I’m totally loving it.

iTunes does have it’s uses in the ‘Listeners Also Bought’ section. I found Mystery Jets that way and they aren’t bad at all.

I’ve also recently bought the new Lostprophets, The Betrayed, and I soo love them. I hope they are at V Festival this year, actually. I’m also loving Vampire Weekend and the New Moon soundtrack. There are so many great songs on the New Moon album that I’m currently having a go at finding some of their albums. One of my faves from it is Friends by Band of Skulls. Here’s hoping their other stuff is just as good.

For reference… some of my absolute, all time favourite bands (the ones I don’t know what I’d do without) are:

  • CAKE
  • Fountains of Wayne
  • Everclear
  • The Beatles (but isn’t this one obligatory?)
  • John Mayer
  • John Lennon
  • Poe
  • Jack’s Mannequin
  • Foo Fighters
  • Paramore

I could go on, but these are the biggies for now, some are more recent than others and a few have been around since I was in high school.

Music totally gets me through my life and anything it throws at me and I know it’s the same for pretty much everyone else. Tastes and experiences may differ, but the passion is the same. I’m glad I share something so important with everyone!

  1. Stevie Wonder puts me in a good mood and energizes me no matter which song I listen to; same for EWF.
